a Process Excellence team at a large global bank, responsible for the efficiency of all functions across the organization, and wanting to understand its own dynamics
A team that improves everyone’s efficiency, turning the lens on itself
The Process Excellence team is responsible for the efficiency of all functions across the organization. It wanted a better understanding of its own group dynamics.
Two questions sat behind that. How could the team make the most of each member’s individual strengths to become a high-performing team? And where should it focus development activity to build the capability it would need in future?
Answering either on instinct would have undercut the team’s own standards. It needed an objective picture of how each person preferred to work, and what those preferences meant once they were combined.
Each person’s working style, rolled up to the team, turned into action
An individual report for every team member, a group view of the whole, and workshops to decide what to do with both.
Map each person’s working style
Every team member completed a behavioral questionnaire, powered by Wave, and received their own Work Roles report: their preferred and least preferred working styles, how those combine, and how to work better with people whose roles are similar or opposite to their own.
Roll it up to the team
The same data was generated at group level, to show what the individual profiles meant once the team was working together.
Turn it into action
Team workshops gave the team leaders and every member a better awareness of their individual and group potential, before planning short and long-term action points to use their strengths and improve capability over time.
short and long-term initiatives in place, grounded in how each person and the group as a whole prefer to work
Faster to act, because the insight came at two levels
Seeing each person’s working style and the team’s combined profile side by side gave the Process Excellence team a plan it could act on straight away.
The individual Work Roles reports showed each member where they added most value and how to work with colleagues whose preferences differed from their own. The group view showed what all of that meant when the team worked together.
With both in hand, the team put short and long-term initiatives in place to perform to the best of its abilities now and build capability for later. The source notes that having insight at both levels, with practical tips attached, made those targeted initiatives quicker to action.
