Measure leadership impact, not just competencies
Leadership Impact shows where a leader will make a real difference across the nine areas your business is measured on, from growth and transformation to delivery and teams.
THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT ASSESS WITH US
The gap between how leaders behave and what they achieve
Competency frameworks describe specific behaviors. They are useful day to day, but hard to compare across roles and organizations. Business outcomes like share price or staff turnover sit too far from any one leader to judge them by.
Leadership Impact sits in between: close enough to a leader's own actions to do something about, broad enough to compare one leader with another. It was developed and validated with thousands of leaders across hundreds of organizations, against independent performance ratings.

Three Ps, nine impact areas
The model groups leadership into three overarching factors, identified from international leadership data. Beneath them sit nine areas where a leader's actions translate into results.
Professional
Effective in specialist contexts, focused on reputation and technical knowledge.
- Service and product delivery. Maintaining productive delivery of goods and services, driving quality customer service and delivering the right solutions.
- Managed risk. Actively controlling risk, championing effective governance and ensuring compliance.
- Expert reputation. Building organizational expertise, promoting technical excellence and enhancing reputation.
People
Effective at managing people across teams, functions and geographies.
- Organizational commitment. Creating a shared sense of purpose, lifting motivation and building morale.
- Successful teams. Building effective teams, attracting and developing talent, and making the most of potential.
- Communication. Communicating with influence, connecting people across functions and geographies, and encouraging involvement.
Pioneering
Effective at finding new opportunities, driving change and achieving growth.
- New products and markets. Identifying market gaps and routes to market, cultivating innovation and generating new solutions.
- Organizational transformation. Delivering transformation, building commitment to change and actively managing it.
- Organizational growth. Increasing stakeholder value, setting challenging goals and driving organizational success.
A score for each area, and the behavior behind it
Impact potential
A score from 1 to 10 for each of the nine impact areas, with a plain-language descriptor, so you can see at a glance where a leader is likely to make the biggest difference.
The behaviors driving it
For every impact area, the specific behaviors behind the score, so a development conversation starts from evidence rather than impressions.
Impact enablers
Reflective questions built from the leader's own profile, to turn the insight into development action.
Situational leadership profile
Where a leader is likely to flourish and where they will find leading harder, which matters most when you are deciding where to place them.
The same data produces a summary for stakeholders, a personal version for the leader, an interview version with outcome-based questions and probes, and a 360 version that adds how colleagues experience their impact.

Find future leaders with the impact profile you need, including people who were never on anyone's radar.
Group analytics show the combined impact of a leadership team: where it is strong, where it is thin, and what nobody around the table brings.
What changes on the ground
Future board members, found
70 leaders were assessed against the impact future board members would need. Those placed on the development program included leaders who had not previously been on the radar.

Leaders who drove a merger forward
A new leadership program used Leadership Impact reports to link individual goals to business strategy after a merger. It worked well enough to run for a second cohort.

The other side of the same profile
Leadership Impact shows where a leader will make a difference. Leadership Risk shows where those same strengths might work against them. Each risk area is linked to an impact area, and both come from one Behavioral Deep Dive completion, so a leader only takes one assessment. Leadership Risk is also available in Wave Connect Develop, where leaders, their managers and HR can see it in the platform.

Leadership impact is the difference a leader makes to the outcomes their organization is measured on. Our model measures it across nine areas, grouped under Professional, People and Pioneering leadership, rather than scoring leaders against a list of competencies.
It predicts a leader's potential impact in each of the nine areas on a 1 to 10 scale, and shows the specific behaviors behind each score. It also shows the situations where they are likely to lead most and least effectively.
Competencies describe specific behaviors, which makes them hard to compare across roles. Leadership impact links behavior to outcomes, so you can compare leaders in different roles and see what each is likely to achieve.
About 35 minutes, completed online. The same completion produces the Leadership Risk report, so a leader does not take a second assessment.
Yes. Using Leadership Impact reports requires a Wave® qualification. The Leadership Impact Practitioner masterclass then covers the model in depth.

Go deeper on leadership
What does 'future-ready' leadership actually look like in 2026?
The term 'Future-ready' gets thrown around a lot. But if you're sitting in HR with critical appointments to make, a fragile culture, and transformation work that can't afford to stall, the last thing you need is another buzzword.
Beyond the balance sheet: The wider implications of poor leadership
As well as the obvious financial implications, a bad leadership decision can derail transformation, damage culture, and even put compliance at risk. In high-stakes, highly regulated industries, the ripple effect of a wrong promotion or senior hire is huge.
